Kashmir in Summers with Gurez Valley - 12 Days

This 12 day trip takes us on an exploration of Kashmir's well-known tourist spots as well as some offbeat locations that not many people have heard of.

This is a trip where we’ll begin to familiarise ourselves with the idea of Kashmir, while witnessing its unparalleled beauty in the company of locals who call this land their home, and carry all its quirks within their soul.

On this journey, we arrive in Kashmir during summers, a time when all the valleys are accessible and the stunning greenery of Kashmir with snow visible on mountain peaks, mesmerises us.

We will learn about the intricacies of life in Kashmir, enjoy the wonderfully unique cuisine in the local homes, ride the Shikara through Dal, live in a houseboat in Kashmir, experience the snowy slopes of Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing destination, live through the magic of Pahalgam, with a visit to its carefully hidden secrets, explore the lesser known Gurez Valley and all of it with the help of our friends there, with their warm conversations leading us on to the most mesmerising of the moments.

So that when we return home, we would tell them once again, “That if there’s heaven on earth, it’s here, it’s here, it’s here.”

Day 1

Srinagar Airport - Awantipora Ruins - Saffron Fields - Pahalgam

On arrival at Srinagar airport (by 12 PM), we will be transferred to Pahalgam. Enroute we visit the Awantipura ruins (1100 years old temple of Lord Vishnu built by King Awantiwareman) and see the beautiful countryside and saffron fields. Overnight at a hotel in Pahalgam.

Day 2

Pahalgam Sightseeing: Baisaran, Chandanwari, Betaab Valley

We head out to explore the various sights around Pahalgam today. At Baisaran, we can ride a horse amidst the beautiful meadows, check out the glacier views at Chandanwari (one of the starting points for the Amarnath Yatra), and explore the riverside at the scenic Betaab Valley. Overnight at the same hotel in Pahalgam.

Day 3

Aru Valley day trek

This morning, we head to Aru Valley for a day hike. We will hike towards Lidderwat, a beautiful meadow on the popular Tarsar Marsar trek route. We will have packed lunch sitting by the river, with nothing but natural beauty and sounds all around. We return to Aru before evening. Overnight at a Guest House in Aru.

Day 4

Aru - Aishmuqam - Cricket bat factory - Drang - Gulmarg

After breakfast, we start travelling towards Gulmarg - the prettiest top of Kashmir, also called the 'Meadow of Flowers'. Enroute we visit the Aishmuqam Shrine (the one from Bajranji Bhaijaan) with a beautiful valley view from the top, and the cricket bat factory that makes some of the finest bats from Kashmiri willow. We drive through pine forests, make a stop at the Drang Waterfall before arriving in Gulmarg. Gulmarg boasts of the highest golf course in the world with 18 holes. On a clear day, one can see the Nanga Parbat. Overnight at a warm wooden hotel in Gulmarg.

Gulmarg sightseeing: Gondola ride

Gulmarg - Srinagar - Dawar (Gurez Valley)

Dawar - Tulail Valley - Dawar

After breakfast, we will head to the remote Tulail Valley. Here we will explore some nearby hikes and have lunch by the riverside. We will head to explore some remote villages of Gurez today, close to the Line of Control. Day 9

Dawar - Wular Lake - Manasbal Lake (Boating) - Srinagar

This morning, we leave Gurez Valley and head to Srinagar. On the way we will cross Wular Lake, the largest freshwater lake in India. We can choose to go boating on Manasbal Lake or reach Srinagar and take a shikara ride on the Dal lake. Tonight we spend a night in a charming and authentic house boat.

Srinagar sightseeing: Shankaracharya Temple - Mughal Gardens - Hazratbal Dargah

We head out for a day of explorations around Srinagar. We start with the Shankaracharya Temple that gives a panoramic view of the entire city, followed by visiting the Mughal Gardens - Nishat Bagh (Abode of pleasure) built by Asif Khan brother in law of Jehangir in 1632 AD, and Shalimar Bagh (Abode of love) built by Jehangir for his wife Empress Noor Jehan. All the gardens are situated on the bank of Dal Lake with the Zabarwan Mountain range in the background. We head out for some shopping in the afternoon, followed by high tea at Taj Vivanta with a majestic sunset view over the Dal Lake.

We were really fortunate to meet Ibrahim from Mountain Magic Trek and Tours. He was pleasant and accommodating. We stayed at his inn the Brown Palace. It is small, homey and the food is good. We took a day long trek that was fairly rigorous but well paced. When we wanted to hike further they were willing to let us do that. They guided us to a location that was away from the crowds and it was beautiful.

Our stay and trek with Ibrahim was very memorable. He guided us well throughout. A gentle all day trek was the highlight of our relaxed stay. The cottage (and it’s cute garden!) had all amenities. Should be back for bigger adventures!
